Jesus Is the Reason for the Season
Dec 25, 2024Following His Example of Love and Service
As Christmas is finally upon us, we’re reminded of the true reason for the season: Jesus Christ. Beyond the lights, gifts, and celebrations, Christmas is about remembering the birth of our Savior and reflecting on the example He set for us.
Jesus didn’t come to be served but to serve (Matthew 20:28), and His life was marked by “good work”—healing the sick, feeding the hungry, and teaching us how to love one another. If we follow His example, we discover that our work isn’t just about paychecks or personal gain. Our true work is serving God by serving others, and the rewards are far greater than anything money can buy.
We Work Unto God, Not for Paychecks
Colossians 3:23-24 teaches us:
“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”
When we shift our perspective from working for a paycheck to working for God, our efforts take on eternal significance. Suddenly, every task—big or small—becomes an opportunity to glorify Him. Whether we’re helping a neighbor, volunteering, or excelling in our careers, we do it all as an act of worship.
The beauty of this mindset is that we don’t work for human applause or temporary rewards. We work unto God, who promises to reward us with an inheritance far greater than we can imagine.
Seek First the Kingdom of God
Jesus gives us the key to a fulfilled life in Matthew 6:33:
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
When we put God first—when our hearts are full of His love and righteousness—everything else falls into place. The word “added” in this verse is powerful. It implies that when we seek God first, there’s no room left for us to add anything to our lives. Our hearts are already full, leaving God to supply whatever else we need or desire.
Think about that for a moment: when your life is centered on God, you don’t have to chase after blessings. God Himself will add them to your life, in His perfect timing and according to His perfect plan.
The Joy of Being of Service
Jesus modeled a life of service, and He calls us to do the same. In John 13:14-15, after washing His disciples’ feet, He said:
“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
When we serve others, we reflect the heart of Jesus. Acts of kindness, generosity, and love are not just good deeds; they are the work God created us to do. As Ephesians 2:10 reminds us:
“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
The work we do for others is ultimately work we do for God. And when we serve with a heart full of love, we find true joy and purpose.
A Heart Full of God
As we celebrate this season, let’s pause to reflect on what it means to have a heart full of God. When your heart is filled with His presence, love, and righteousness, there’s no room for fear, worry, or striving. Instead, you live in a state of trust, knowing that God will provide everything you need—and even the desires of your heart.
Psalm 37:4 reminds us:
“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.”
When we delight in God, our desires align with His will. He becomes our ultimate reward, and everything else He adds to our lives is simply an overflow of His goodness.
Let’s Follow Jesus This Season
This Christmas, let’s remember why we celebrate: Jesus is the reason for the season. Let’s honor Him by loving one another, serving those in need, and working with hearts that are fully committed to God.
When we follow Jesus’ example, we not only bless others but also experience the fullness of life that comes from living for Him. And as we seek God first, He will faithfully add everything we need—just as He promised.
So, let that sink in: your heart, full of God, leaves no room for you to add anything. Only He can fill the gaps. Let’s rest in that truth and celebrate the greatest gift of all—Jesus Christ.
Merry Christmas!
